We will be bringing them to the pet shop when they are weaned - at about 5 or 6 weeks. In the meantime, they are delightful to watch :) There’s nothing like having babies in the house!

OHHHHHHH… they’re soooooo cute!!!!
Aww......they’re darling little buggers aren’t they? They look so soft!
oh, how sweet! I just did a quick read about degus as pets. They sound quite fun! Enjoy.
They are very cute and lovely. What are they?
Awwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are ADORABLE!
They’re called Degus, Abi, small rodents similar in appearance to Gerbils (albeit four to six times larger) but actually more closely related to Cavids (Guinea pigs, et al). They’re native to Chile, where they live in large social groups.
Because of an oddity in their hormonal physiology they are prone to diabetes and have been used for a long time in researching the subject. Given that they tend to be friendly, entertaining to watch, and are fairly easy to keep and care for (as long as one keeps the whole “prone to diabetes” thingy in mind), they make good pets, though still relatively rare ones.
As it happens, a small pet store near us breeds them. we bought a couple a few months back. We specifically requested they be the same sex, while babies are great fun to watch we really weren’t looking to have to deal with a new litter every few months, and were told by the supposed “expert” the two we got were both male. We subsequently named them Butch and Sundance. It turns out that Butch is, well, not very Butch, she has since been renamed Emma.
At this point we can’t reasonably separate the two of them, they’re pretty tightly bonded, so our only hope is that the “expert” was wrong on both counts, they’re both female and Emma was just pregnant when we got her. The dates make that possible, but it seems more likely we’re going to be having baby degus around every few months for the foreseeable future. The “expert” had best be prepared to help us find homes for the little tykes or face our not inconsiderable wrath
well, those are just too cute!! did they look like tiny pink marbles when they were born? we’ve had gerbils, etc (heck, even baby bunnies look like little pink morsels) that were born so incredibly bald and tiny that it was amazing to think these tiny things were real living breathing creatures- it is soooo much fun to watch them grow and play-
umm, i hope they were welcomed into the world with appropriate gifts of knitted blankets, bonnets, and booties!!!
stay happy-
!!!
Eight!
