As we didn’t get home until relatively late last night, I got almost no knitting done yesterday and as I have another crowded day today, I have to get going pretty soon…
...so there isn’t much to report, sorry to say.
I would like to ask a question or for your kind thoughts and or advice, if I may?
I have a short-sleeved, black, knit dress with an empire waist and an A-line type body. Very plain. But, as it’s a black dress, it can be very useful. How might I go about dressing this up (via knit or crochet) so that it’s less plain? A collar? I keep thinking about an overskirt, but that would be a lot more ambitious than I think I can manage…
Funny how a person can be creative and inspired when the subject is someone else’s clothes but completely clueless when it comes to their own! Heheh…
Happy Thursday :)

my thoughts, for whatever they might be worth, are to leave dress as is and dress it up or down with accessories- the ‘fou fou’ kinds of scarves may be trendy and the object of jokes, but they do add a lot of sparkle- different shawls and scarves using different wraps with the dress would change it too-
or how about a bolero type jacket or shrug to go with it- the latest vogue knits has a lovely bolero sweater that looks wonderful (and is knitted on size 9 needles (well i think that’s the size) from worsted weight yarn- or maybe the flowers that are popular now and can be pinned on-
i think i would hesitate to change the basic dress- what’s the saying…‘accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!’
stay happy-
Check out Digital Yarn blog or Knit Happens blog for the sweater from the new Rebecca. It might look really good with it in a jewel tone!
I go with a little wrap top or bolero as well
I’ve been eyeing a hole-y wrap sweater for a similar purpose—the one I like best is by Adrienne Vittadini but I can’t find a picture of it today. I think I also saw one in Quest, that metallic-y yarn, too.
On the fashion page in my local newspaper was a picture of a crochet (think Irish lace type crochet) shrug that might do the ticket. A knitted or crochet collar and cuffs which can be tempararily attached to the dress might look good too. My mother made me a set years ago that were Irish crochet and I sewed them on a shortsleeved dress. They were easy to remove for washing when needed. Scarves are also good or how about some jewelry ... bold pins or chains or ???
ha, me again- i knew i’d seen something recently while going through back issues of knitty- i think this is a real winner too, and it might work quite well with an empire waisted dress-

Yep - I’m chiming in with the crowd - a little shrug or bolero, definitely. In the new Knitter’s there’s even a little cropped vest-type thing that would look really special if done in a glitzy/rich yarn.
By the way - you’ve been making lovely socks lately. Definitely putting your best foot forward.
(hehehe…the devil made me say it!)
I go with a shawl or shawls too. A black dress can go lots of places.
Barb beat me to the punch on the Shimmer pattern. That’s what I would recommend!
