Scarf and Sock thoughts

Well, the inaugural night of Knitting Chatters couldn’t have gone better!  It was great fun - we chatted, talked about current projects hooted and hollered and just had a wonderful time.  Thank you so much, all of you who dropped in!  We had a blast; the only thing missing was the fireworks!

I was working on this last night:

Scarf beginning

This idea has been running around in my head for a long time and finally came together.  There’s an old crochet afghan pattern called Trail of Tears.  I’ve always liked the technique used, but didn’t want to be crocheting something in one piece as big as an afghan.  Besides, I already have the entrelac monster-ghan to neglect :)

So I got to wondering if the pattern would make a decent scarf and decided to try it and see what happened.  I hauled out my favorite bright colors (worsted weight), a size H hook, and gave it a shot.

Chain 36

Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook and in next 10 chains, ch 10 skipping 10 base chains, 12 dc.  Ch 3, turn

Every row is worked the same way and I’m changing colors every three rows.  Then, when you’re all done, you haul out your largest crochet hook and chain up those lines in the middle :) Like this:

It occurs to me that you could set up the scarf so that you had four solid sections of, say, 6 dcs each and three chain columns.  You could chain up the first and third column in one direction and chain the middle column down in the opposite direction.  I’m curious enough to give it a try now because I want to see what it looks like!  LOL!

I’m seriously thinking about trying Grumperina’s Jaywalker Socks.  I have a beautiful pink/purple variegate that would work wonderfully in those chevrons.  I’ve been thinking about socks - adult sized, sock/fingering weight yarn socks (as opposed to little bitty worsted weight socks) for a while now so this might be the pattern :)

Anyway, I expect to have a fun weekend playing with things and trying stuff out :)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  1. Dang it! I was having a major knitting catastrophe last night & totally spaced your inaugural chat. :( Next time, I’m there with bells on!

  2. oh, i bet you did have a nice time chatting- sounds like fun-

once upon a time, waaaay back when, i made an afghan (okay, so it was a big baby blanket- humor me) using a pattern similar to what you are doing with the scarf- it was easy and a real eye-catcher- i love things that allow you to *let* people think you’ve done something really tricky!

it’s always sock-time around here- i used your ‘dot and diamond’ pattern and changed it to work with cascade fixation casting on 48 sts and using size 2 and 3 needles and it is perfect for one of the baby princesses here- thanks for the pattern-

    stay happy-

  3. That trail of tears thing is pretty damned cool.  Now you’ve got me thinking about a knitted version.  Knit a few stitches, bind off a few, knit a few.  Next row, cast on a few over where you bound off before, sort of like a column of one-row buttonholes lined up on top of each other.  Then chain ‘em up the column at the end.  Ooooohh!!  I may have to try it!  Think I could make it work on sock cuffs?  Thanks a LOT!  Now I have to go swatch.  Geeze… BTW, how do you secure the final loop of the chain at the top?

  4. Bron - Please don’t worry about it; I saw your pictures and you have my complete sympathy!  How disappointing was that :(

  5. Barb - I’ve looked at the Fixation but the elastic content makes me nervous.  How do you manage it so it isn’t all stretched out?  I’d be afraid of killing the yarn while I was knitting!

  6. Caren - I have no idea what I’m going to do to secure the final loop.  I haven’t gotten there yet :) I’ll be really interested to see what you make of this from a knitting standpoint!  Post pictures!

  7. I wish I had arrived earlier to the chat last night. I will look forward to next week. I love the bright colors of the scarf. I have been thinking of the Jaywalker socks too. My hesitation is that the pattern will be too tight for my ankle. I have had that happen a few times bigcry.gif width=29 height=15

  8. Gah!  I made a mental note to join you last night - I should have known to make a *real* one!  Next week, I hope.

(You know, I think that pattern may be sitting in a UFO bag somewhere - only I know it under the name “Jacob’s Ladder.")

  9. The chat was great. Barb, I was hoping you would be there. But omg, I went to Rob’s site. Entrelac lace! Maybe when I retire.

It occurs to me you could secure the final loop with a row of sc across, like the other side of the base chain.

  10. My only regret on the chat was not writing down all the blog addresses and other sites mentioned. :-(
LOL the scarf is cool; making a ladder on purpose!

  11. I had great fun last night--thanks for being the hostess with the mostess.

Does the chatroom automatically close at 11 EST? Everything stopped after that.

  12. The chat was so much fun—so glad I remembered only a little after 8 pm!  My in-the-flesh knitting guild meetings are Thursdays as well, but I should get home in time to participate in our chat as well.  Thanks for bringing calorie-free chocolate chip cookies—I had a cup of Starbucks Venetian (?) coffee this morning in your honor food-smiley-010.gif width=32 height=32

  13. why dont you secure the loop with a big tassel that won’t work its way back through the loop? This would double as a fringe for a scarf worked in this way…

  14. I’ve been a bit behind in my blog reading (an understatement) and just noticed your entry about Knitting Chatters.  What a great idea!  I’m going over to my calendar right now and marking it down for next Thursday.  It sounds like the chat room will be full next week!  Cheers.

  16. OMG you guys, you’re making me blush.  But I’m thrilled to death that you all had a good time and sound like you all want to do it again!  So do I!!

Maureen - Come whenever you can and stay as long as you like!

Colleen - You’re right!  Now that you mention it, I have seen the pattern under the Jacob’s Ladder name too!  Thanks for reminding me :)

Amaryllis - Yup - that would probably work.  Thanks for the idea!

Aarlene - LOL!  Making ladders on purpose!  Try these URLs:

Nathalie - What a cool idea - and I love tassels!

Cheryl - It will be great to see you!  We’re apparently a bit rowdy, but very friendly :)
