I have an FO to show today. Yesterday, I dug it out of my WIP bin where it has languished for the last couple of months and took a long look at it. It really was all but completed so I bound off, made a decision I’ve been see-sawing on for weeks and finally, at about 11:30 last night, finished the last stitch.
With great pleasure, may I present:
The Ruffled Snowdrop
And thanks to Laura, who finished the one she was making for her mother (and a beautiful job she did, too!) and thanks to Barb who kept asking me what had happened to the periwinkle shawl :) Heheh, now you know!
It was the edging - actually the idea of picking up umpty-zillion stitches for a knitted edging that made me feel faint. But while I was looking around for ideas yesterday, I remembered the “ruffles” discussion we’d had a couple of weeks ago and besides that, Barb had mentioned a ruffled scarf that she had just completed.
So the idea was born.
I had worked the shawl on size 10 needles so I dug out a size 10 crochet hook and crocheted dcs all the way around (with extras at the point). Next row was 2 dcs in every dc of the first row. The third row was crocheted even - 1 dc in every dc. The last row was a pdc in dc, 2 dc in next dc and repeat ending with a pdc (picot double crochet - dc, ch 2, sc in tip of dc). The picot is intended to be subtle, I didn’t want anything big hanging off the edges, so that’s why it’s only two chains long. Those four rows took at least eight hours to do and used every bit as much yarn as the body of the shawl did.

I love this shawl!

Beautiful, Robbyn! MORE than beautiful! And that last picture is amazing. It speaks right to the essence of what knitting is all about, comfort, coziness, beauty. Lovely.
Ryan - Thanks :) I guess that’s why it turned out to be such a satifying project - because all those things you mentioned are aspects of what draws us to this particular craft and they’re all present in this shawl.
that is really beautiful beyond words- when you wear it you will definitely be the ‘belle’ of any occasion- congratulations- umm, let’s see what i can ‘nag’ about now- never fear, i’ll come up with something!
do you have any kind of ‘guesstimate’ about the total yardage you used?
stay happy-
Beautiful work, Robbyn! Well done. It looks wonderfully warm, too. Perhaps you’ll take it with you on your next cruise!
Barb - I believe I went through not quite 1200 yds of yarn. But the ruffle is at least half of that. Stephanie’s knitted lace edging, which is absolutely lovely for those who aren’t cowards :), would use a lot less. I also didn’t make the body as written - I just worked the pattern until the body was approximately the dimensions I wanted.
Anne - Oh yes, this is coming with me at the end of the month. Purely aside of its utility, it would feel like leaving a child at home. I expect that feeling will pass in time :)
That indeed is BEAUTIFUL. I love the ruffled edges. That makes it even more special. What a treat to see this!
Joan - Many thanks! I’ve just kind of gotten into the ruffle thing and don’t know where it’s all going to stop yet :)
It looks like a cozy and warm shawl. The color is one of my favoites. It really looks smashingly wonderful!!
Thanks Margene - I really lucked into this batch of yarn and am very grateful to have done so. I unabashedly adore this color and just don’t see it as often as I’d like :)
Oh Robbyn......that shawl is just INCREDIBLE!!!!!! The color is gorgeous. The ruffles are a fantastic addition.
You must be so pleased with the shawl. Just in time for your trip too.
Maureen - I am thrilled all to hell and back with this and am looking forwad to wearing it on formal night aboard ship (and annoying my father no end - he will HATE the color and feel that I’m showing off :)
Ah, the greatest bliss in life...making oneself perfectly happy AND at the exact same time, making one’s parent insanely unhappy!
Seriously, though, that is one perfectly lovely shawl you have created, and the ruffle is a grand finishing touch.
Congratulations, and enjoy!
It looks lovely! Congratulations!
Hi Diane :) - Yeah, that about sums it up (evil grin). And thanks!
June - Thank you so much! I hope you all are feeling better over there!
Oh Robbyn, that shawl is totally gorgeous and you look so good in it. I can see the “love” all over your face. Great Job! makes me want to knit! I would have to have a hands on instruction though. I have tried in the past and reading the instructions confusses me:(
~ DAWN
Thanks Dawn :) I guess knitting comes in its own time. I crocheted for 22 years before I learned how to knit - and good thing I did or there would have been no ruffle for the shawl!
I love your shawl too.
What a wonderful job you did! And gosh - I think you posted more pics of yourself in one entry than we’ve seen....uh....ever!
Cyber high five to ya!
Bron - Thank you, thank you :) And you’ll probably never see me again either :) Myria had to practically nail my feet down to get those because I really, really hate having my picture taken. Alas, there wasn’t any other way to show the shawl as it should be shown.
No, that wouldn’t have worked, Myria is even more camera shy than I am :)
How cool is that! The colour is fantastic and it looks great on you. Just the right size! It’s great to know how to both knit and crochet. Sometimes a blending of the two is just spot on. You go girl!!
Cneryl - Thanks! I love being able to bring my crochet skills in on a project - combining the tow things really makes my day :)
Woo Hoo! That looks so soft and divine! I’m glad you got it done in time for the cruise. Great idea on the ruffle, even though it took eight hours, i’m sure that was still less than knitting it. Well, it would have been for me. Awesome job.
wow wow - inspirational! What a great achievement! I thought i had missed the showing of this as a FO and am very glad to see that I had not. its great to see pics of you too: ‘bout time’ ;)
its nice to put a face to the name at long last that’s all…
Laura - Thanks. I still think the one you made is a better color for going to sea in :) But I’m not offering to trade…
Hiya Nat :) Thanks - it’s a lovely, and surprisingly easy pattern to knit. Not even a little difficult - even for a first time lace maker :)
Wow, that is a beautiful shawl! The lace shows so well - even tho you haven’t blocked it yet! Those crochet ruffles really completes the shawl and gives it some weight to balance the lace methinks.
Hey Erin - The weight of the ruffles surprised me too - but I think you’re right - they really help in showing the shawl off to its best advantage :)
