New projects and old…

We’ve finally had some snow!  Not much, mind you, just enough to cover rooftops and lawns but because the temperature hasn’t gotten above 20 in the last week, it’s all still there.  Of course by now it is getting a little shabby looking :)

As Monday was a chemo day spent mostly at the hospital, little simple things are the order for now :) But I did get a few of those done!

Bright yellow socks

The socks are finished and I think they look exceptionally cheerful and warm.  This yarn is a little bulkier than I expected and took just over a ball to make the pair on size 5 needles.  I usually have a little left over from a 50 gram ball - but then I’m usually working DK or light worsted on size 3 or 4 needles.

Green Tease long-band hat

There’s also this, another long-band hat, to replace the one I liberated from the Dulaan bag.  As I am now dealing with no-hair days, and I have decided to try and avoid the dratted wig if at all possible (you can’t believe what a pain in the butt that thing is!) - hats have become a necessity indoors and out.  I had a couple made and ready to go but found that I needed another so I grabbed this hat, which fits me perfectly with the promise that I would replace it with another ASAP.

And, to add to the excitement (heheh...), I completed my first washcloth - started and finished it at the hospital on Monday :)

Blue waRshcloth

Nothing spectacular and not even a particularly exciting yarn, but it will serve me well and I’m planning on making a few more to have on hand.

Other things in process:  there has been some more dyeing going on but that will have to wait until Friday because this batch is the basis for a tutorial on crock-pot dyeing which I have yet to write :) I have also taken out the Autumn Seeds sweater again, ripped the darned sleeve again and am about halfway back down the length - for the third time :) I’m hoping to have something on that to show you Friday as well.  I also want to make another Pinwheel Hat and I have three balls of a gloriously red microfiber blend that I’d like to turn into something nice for Myria for Valentine’s day - I just don’t know what yet :)

Chatters is definitely on for tomorrow night!  In the mean time, stay warm and knit happy :)

  3. well, just as you get snow and signs of winter, we seem to be entering a spring-like phase- after only a few days of warmth and sunshine, the trees have decided it is time to leaf out and i see signs of life among the perenniels already- i think they are tricking themselves though-

those are bright cheery little socks- should make for ‘happy feet’ (sorry, been around too many little people lately!)-

do take good care of yourself and stay happy-

  4. Barb - It’s nice to hear about possible signs of spring somewhere!  I do prefer the cold weather in general, but I really miss the greenery and the flowers.

  5. That hat is cheerfulness personified. :) I like your washcloth too.

All our snow has gone your way. It was 66 yesterday and we were in T-shirts. Of course, we’re getting another cold spell at the weekend, but we’re enjoying this while it lasts!

  8. What is that stitch used for your washcloth?  It looks like alternating stockinette and garter stitch.

I, for one, am waiting with baited breath to see the crockpot tutorial.  If I take up dyeing, that will probably be my primary means b/c I don’t want to mess with buying a bunch of new equipment.

Wow, you have some patience and persistence to rip back your Autumn Leaves sweater.  I finished my second top-down raglan and it is an improvement from my first one (pics should be on my blog in a couple days...http://ibonobo.blogspot.com...if you want to see it).  The underarms are an improvement, but still a little saggy.  But I refuse to rip it out!  I’ve got a third top-down on the needles, and I’ve been very aggressive about avoiding that again.  I’ve made the sweater more close-fitting, and I’m going to put in short-row bust darts.

I was originally going to cast on 3 inches of stitches at the underarm (which is EZ’s 8%), but when I got to the underarm area, I was still shy some stitches, so I cast the rest of them on, which ended up being 5 inches of stiches.  And that was with my increasing the body at a faster rate in the first place.

I think it will turn out great.  I used yarn overs at the raglan seems, and at the center of each sleeve, I did yarn over, knit 2, yarn over, with decreases on either side of the yarn overs to keep the stitch count even.  So, I’ll have lacy short sleeves.

Disclaimer: my blog is not primarily a knitting blog, so the knitting content is sprinkled throughout.  I have categories on the right-hand side so you can click on knitting and get all posts with knitting content in them.

  12. Marcy - The pattern, over an odd number of stitches, goes like this:

    Row 1: *K1, P1; repeat from *.  End K1.
    Row 2: Purl

Regarding the sweater, when does it stop being patience and persistence and start becoming stupidity and wrong-headedness?  LOL!  However, I do think I’m going to wind up with a wearable garment pretty soon now - the first sleeve is almost done!

  14. Thank you for a great dyeing demo! Hmm, that pile of handspun…

Hope you don’t mind an idea: I’m doing chemo too, and just couldn’t deal with wigs. But while wandering around my local Long’s Drugs, I found a scrunchie with hair about 5” long, Scünci brand, I think. I’ve been wearing long scarves tied at the back of the neck, with the long ends twisted and wrapped around the top of my head. I just slid the scrunchie on before I wrapped the long ends up, and the back of the scarf hides the scrunchie itself. I like to think it’d pass the galloping horse at 20 paces test, anyway! I feel a lot better about going to the grocery store…
(They had styles with alligator clips, but I figured a staple gun would work better than that! :-O )

  15. Lori - Sorry to hear about the chemo but it’s better than the alternative, I guess :) Thanks for sharing your idea - I might just look into that!
