This seems to have been the week of knitting mistakes. Nothing major, just stupid!
When I was making a sock last week, I got to the heel. All went well and I got to where I was picking up the gusset stitches. I was thinking it felt a little tight but I figured maybe I was just knitting with greater tension than usual. I tend to tighten up on socks anyway. But there were the stitches to pick up too - there didn’t seem to be enough along the side of the heel flap. Oh well, I thought, these things happen and I fudged a couple of stitches (yes, on both sides of the flap - doh!) and proceeded to start the gusset decreases. I actually got a couple of rows worked before I realized I hadn’t turned the heel - went straight from the heel flap to the gusset! How dumb is that?
And then, I did the same damned thing again last night :) Brain turning to tapioca pudding, eh? At least I discovered it while I was still picking up stitches.
This, however, has gone better :)

Aww, that sock is so cute. Sorry it can’t have a mate. But your shawl is splendid--you’re right about that stitch pattern being lovely.
Toni - This is the dream of several years and is possibly the most fun thing I’ve ever worked on :) And will be, from last Saturday on, be associated with Forbidden Planet which we were watching :) Imagine Leslie Neilsen playing a non-comic part!
Hi Robbyn: Sorry about your sock being lonely: perhaps you could frog it, and add a heathery gray, and do the bands and heels in the pinks?
I did the same thing last weekend, starting my first ever sock. As I frogged my daughter asked, and I told her I did not have enough yarn. She looked at me with the withering scorn of 21 years and said, surely that’s the first thing you check.
The shawl is lovely and I’m looking forward to seeing it complete. I am still smiling about the image of Barb in Texas twirling her circs like lariats. We do that here in Alberta too.
May see you Thursday evening. I hope it goes well!

I’m going to try & remember to come by & chat - but with my very own “tapioca brain” don’t be miffed if I’m a no-show! I think it’s a splendid idea. :)
Love all that red, girl. That’s one gorgeous stitch pattern!
seeing ‘the lonely sock’ (does anyone else hear herb alpert playing ‘the lonely bull’ here? or is anyone else as incredibly ancient as i am? or maybe fond of oldies stations?) reminds me of the knitting i used to do for my dear m-i-l who was an amputee and only needed one sock- i think of her and how she would have been so excited by all the self-striping yarns available now- heck, i could have tried out a skein of so many and only had to do one sock of each to please her and give her a sock wardrobe fit for a queen- never any second sock syndrome to worry about-
looking forward to meeting lots of your readers in chat- i will be recognizable because i cannot spell and also i seem to think i am a reincarnation of e.e. cummings-
stay happy-
Amayllis - Nice to know I’m not the only sock-frogger here :) Your daughter sounds like a big help! It will be great to see you tomorrow night, if you can make it!
Bron - It will be lovely if you can make it, but I do understand about prior commitments - not to mention the dreaded tapioca brain syndrome - LOL!
Barb - I remember “The Lonely Bull” - loved that piece and can hee it in my head even as I type! I thought Herb Alpert was pretty tasty too :) Well, in those days, anyway!
So I signed on all excited, only to discover today is Wednesday.
Oh. OK. I guess that means tomorrow is Thursday, huh (wandering away from the computer in a happy, sabbatical induced fog....)
Rob - LOL! I’m delighted to hear you’re enjoying your sabbatical! Yes, tomorrow is Thursday :)
