I wanted to pass along a link I ran across this weekend because it’s almost the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. This little flower hat is just sweet :) The pattern, unfortunately, is in Finnish, a language I’m not real familiar with. But it looks as though it was created from a version of our old standby, the razor shell, expanding the number of stitches and using a non-yarnover increase. I would guess, since this is a child’s hat, that the yarn is fine - fingering weight, maybe?
If you click on the links down the right-hand side of the page, you’ll find more patterns, also all in Finnish - but this beautiful Rose Shawl has a couple of charts from which the whole can be worked. This is a pretty piece and reminds me of both this crocheted Fan Shawl and the so-popular Flower Basket from Fibertrends, except with the baskets upside down.
Lord, if there was ever the incentive to learn another language! Over the weekend, I was thinking that there must be hundreds of patterns out there in many languages and I can’t find them because I don’t even know how to search for them. I suspect I’m going to be spending some time with a translator and a search engine in the near future :)
We saw another Hayao Miyazaki film this weekend, My Neighbor Totoro. It is very sweet and a lot of fun. Not long on detailed plot, it is more of a vignette so it’s message is more subtle. Not everything supernatural is evil, and there is more wonder in the world than, perhaps, you imagine. Very much recommended.
I got stuck starting the Kerry Blue shawl, but am still working on it. I did a little more on the red shawl and have nearly finished the second mitten - none of which would have made for very interesting pictures, I’m afraid :)

And looking for patterns is other languages is loads of fun, albeit it a little frustrating when you do find a pattern and then can’t knit it.
Ryan - Yes, I’ve seen it. I can’t say I didn’t like it, but it’s my least favorite :)
As for other-language patterns, I can struggle through French and probably Spanish, but I’d need help with anything else. What I’m hoping to find on this sojourn are charts!

ahh, movies for grown-ups sounds lovely- we had a marathon of vintage ‘care bears’ and ‘my little pony’ movies around here over the week-end- i have that theme song from ‘my little pony’ stuck in my tiny mind yet- argh!!

My Neighbor Totoro isn’t exactly an adult’s film - none of Miyazaki’s films are aimed at grown-ups…exactly. But they aren’t saccharine either and are always enjoyable (as well as being just beautiful to look at) without being precious. You might want to avoid this one because you’ll be out in those woods of yours looking for Totoro - I know you would because if I had any convenient woods, I’d be out there too :)

Me again! I knew I’d seen that shawl somewhere, so I looked through my shawl binder and Lion Brand has it. Done in a heavier yarn, it isn’t as lovely, But the stitch pattern looks the same even though the picture is sorta fuzzy. Do you have the book “Knitting Languages”? I don’t know if Finnish is included, but it includes a LOT…
Remember when we had our rotten days? I heard back from them. They are a knitting magazine, I thought it was a personal website. I have NO Finnish whatsoever,lol.
In English they thanked me for my comments but as it was a Finnish magazine for Finnish people they didn’t have a translation.
That made sense; are there any knitting magazines that publish in more than one language?
