In pursuit of skinny scarves…

Well, not a lot got done this week :) I did a little more on the shawl, a little more on the blanket and have been perusing the net for hat (something besides watch caps and their variations) and skinny scarf patterns.  I borrowed one of Myria’s (scarves) a while back and really liked it - therefore I need to make some of my own :) Actually, I’d like to make hat and scarf sets.  I’m still working that out in my head but it doesn’t seem like it should be terribly difficult.

We got ice and sleet on Wednesday and snow on top of that yesterday.  In fact the temperatures are lower than they’ve been for quite a while and there’s more snow floating down as I type.  It sure does look like winter out there but I’m betting on an early spring - just kind of feels that way somehow.

Dad is off on his 4th or 5th trip through the Panama Canal, a nice long cruise.  He’s spending a few days with his brother (my Uncle Howie) in Florida before the ship departs and I hope he has a wonderful time.

  1. Wooly Wonka Fibers has a free hat pattern that I bet you could easily create a skinny scarf to match.  http://beavercreekfarm.typepad.com/Belle_Starr_Hat.pdf

  2. I find if I make a skinny scarf I like to make it long enough so I can fold it in half and put an end in the fold so it holds its self in place.
Glad to see you are typing! bow.gif width=15 height=20

  3. A year or so ago I knit one of the Multi-Directional Diagonal scarfs (pattern is on the web somewhere).  I had yarn left over so I did a shorter, wider version long enough to go around my head.  Seamed it together and picked up stitches long one edge and decreased it to fill in the top of the hat.  The scarf band is wide enough I can turn up a small cuff on it.  It’s one of my favorite hats and I plan to make another as soon as I can find some time to knit for me.  I would imagine you could do something similar with just about any scarf pattern you like ... just make the band part wider than the scarf and then fill in the crown.  I did something similar with the Fidget scarf pattern (again on the web somewhere, a blog I think) but that one did turn out more like a watch cap.

  4. I’ve been into hats lately. I think the Koolhaas really got me hooked. They’re so quick to knit!

  5. Chris - That’s a really pretty hat and I even have DK weight yarn to work it with.  Better, I have enough yarn to make a hat and a scarf :)

    THanks for the link!

  6. Kathy - That’s exactly what I have in mind - long enough to double so I can drape it around my neck and tuck the ends through the loop :)

I’m glad to be typing too, but honestly, thank heavens for spell checkers!

  7. Charlotte - Cool idea! I did something similar last year and it worked out very nicely.  I’m reminding myself that vertical garter stitch makes dandy ribbing :)

  8. Opal - Yup - quick and easy - and a nice little canvas to play with too, you know, in terms of stitches and colors.  Because you know up front that this is something you won’t have to invest half a year in to see how it comes out!

  11. have you considered the Yarn Harlot’s One Row Handspun Scarf ???- super easy but not mind-dead, looks great and works well for the ‘doubled and pulled through’ look

  13. Susan - That’s a great suggestion!  I’ve made several of the one-row scarves - I love the pattern.  It just hadn’t occurred to me to do it narrow!

It’ll be great to see you at chat!
