Getting Underway…

I woke up at around 3:30 this morning to a brilliant full moon, streaming in the windows.  It was so gorgeous, I got up and went out to the kitchen (better view) to look at it for a while.  Both cats showed up hoping for an early breakfast, but that wasn’t happening :)

Yesterday I got down to brass tacks :) I realized that the longer it took to finish the hood/wimple (so I could acquire the size 4 circular for the new project) the more opportunity I had to talk myself out of attempting Picovoli.  It was happening - I’d caught myself doing it a couple of times already.  So there was only one thing to do…

Hood on stitch holders

...move the hood to a pair of stitch holders.  It’s not far from being finished and won’t take much time to complete but I felt that if I were going to get Picovoli done it was essential that I start immediately.

So, now the needle was freed up and swatching began with the sport weight cotton.  I was shooting for a gauge of 22sts/4” or thereabouts. First I got this:

First swatch, 6 st/in

This came out to 6 stitches/inch.  I wasn’t happy though I did discover that this Pure and Simple cotton is very nice to work with :) So I went up to a size 6 needle and got this:

Second swatch, 5 st/in

This time we had 5 stitches per inch and a much looser knit than I would be comfortable wearing - if I wanted peek-a-boo mesh I’d go to Frederick’s of Hollywood :) Besides, at that gauge, this yarn looked pretty sloppy to me.

Great, I was thinking, Now what?

Then I had an idea!  Remember this?

Paradiso cotton

It’s the perfect weight, all cotton and has over 200 yards per ball.  I was going to make a Mourning Dove Tee-shirt (a reference to the colors) but never did do it :) Surprise, surprise… It’s been marinating in the stash for a little over a year and I should have way more than enough to make Picovoli.

Just about perfect!

Just about perfect!

So, after doing the happy dance I cast on - my second attempt to cast directly onto a circular needle.  When I was ready to do the joining, I took the whole thing out into the kitchen where the light was better and told Myria I was doing something a little ticklish so not to mind if she heard any hearty cursing or pathetic whimpering.

And it worked…

Picovoli - the beginning

...not that it looks like much yet :) And I can put the hood/wimple back on the size 4 circular and get it finished.  Yee-hah!

We have Chatters tomorrow night and Friday, at long last, the Tayle of the Dragon Wings!

Happy Wednesday:)

  1. Whew! Great start! I love the colors in that yarn. :)
I don’t know, though. Robbyn...knitting a top...that whole concept is blowing my mind. It’ll take some getting used to...then again, I always knew you had hidden depths! ::wink::

  2. Yay!!! A circ cast on! For a sweater! And an adult sized sweater! Way to go Robbyn.

I too tried casting on for Picovoli, but could not get gauge on any of the yarns I tried. Time for a trip to the store.

On a brighter note, I have started a baby blanket from your pattern, using 5mm circs and a sport weight yarn. It’s pretty. I had not realized, from your picture, that it’s actually pretty on both sides. (Silly me.) Thaks a bunch for the pattern.

  3. Bron - You think it’s blowing your mind? >>points at forehead<< You should see what it’s like in here!  Heheh…

  4. Amaryllis - I’m glad you’re enjoying the baby blanket.  It is pretty on both sides though I like the “mesh” side better :)

I almost dries last night trying to get gauge and really didn’t think I was going to until I remembered the Paradiso!  Thank goodness - saved my sanity and my intentions!

  5. I’m going to watch the sweater progress from the corner with envy.  I’ve decided that I will not make anything for me that isn’t an accessory - because I’m convince that the weight will, someday, come off, and I’m waiting for that glorious day (not to mention - then it will take less yarn!).

Piccovoli has always interested me, though.  Can’t wait to see what Robbyn does to the simple, simple design.  (You wanna bet that you can’t make it through that much stockinette without “tweaking” the design? bulb.gif width=15 height=22 )

  6. Your knitting is so neat and even, I am seriously envious.  I know what you mean about peekaboo mesh though - not flattering on any but the youngest and skinniest of beauty queens.

  7. Colleen - Well, you may be right about the tweaking.  I have an idea I’d like to try, but part of me seriously thinks - for this first attempt - I should just do what the pattern says :) I guess we’ll see…

  8. Pam - Thank you, it’s kind of you to say.  But wait until you get a look at a broad swath of the Paradiso - it’s a somewhat thick-and-thin yarn and doesn’t look particularly even.  Covers a multitude of sins, that does :)

  9. Look at all that determination you have. I have no doubt that Picovoli will be beautiful. I look forward to seeing the Wimple finished too.

  10. Maureen - Well, I guess that’s true.  I’m generally far better motivated by curiosity than anything else though :) Thanks!

  11. among the most wonderful words that can be seen on a knitting pattern are ‘gauge doesn’t really matter’! unfortunately that just doesn’t apply to sweaters though- congrats on finding the perfect yarn and getting gauge- i know the finished product is going to be pretty- nice color, but you know i liked the ‘seasick’ color too- this one does appear to be a more ‘robbyn-ish’ shade-

    stay happy-

  12. Barb - Even if I wasn’t thrilled with the “seasick” collor, I was very pleased with the yarn so I will be using it at some point :)
