Electricity and Sock Tales

We had a bit of a kerfluffle this morning.  We went down into the basement to check our breakers and found two (labeled “Spare") that weren’t supposed to be being used.  Interestingly though, they were in the on position.  We turned them off and a minute later our across-the-hall neighbor came down stating that he’d just lost power in a couple of rooms.  In other words, for the last two years and a little, we’ve been paying for part of the electrical consumption across the hall.  Sigh…

We called the landlord and he came over.  He was very glad, he said, that we had brought this to his attention and he had had no idea this was the case and would, of course, direct his workers to correct things as soon as possible.  No mention was made of the money we have already paid out for service that we didn’t get.  Sigh…

I did manage to get the socks finished over the weekend and am very pleased with them.

Now I’m wondering how to vary the pattern.  The basket weave is very cute, no question.  But I don’t want to do it for every pair I make as I’m planning on making quite a few pairs of these :)
Maybe some little cables?  Diamonds?  It’s fun to think about anyway.  These took less than a skein of worsted so I started a little cap to go with them…

Hat

How about a little basket weave stripe?

...as I think I have plenty of yarn left over to work in a little design in the sock color.  I hope it will be cute :)

I did make some progress on the Waves shawl, but it still just looks like a triangle so I won’t bore you with another picture of it just yet :) And, I think I’ve found a lace pattern for the edging that will be simple and attractive!

Myria surprised me with an early Christmas present!

Polar Express

The Polar Express

She knows how I love my Christmas movies and thought I might enjoy adding this one to the rotation.  So we snuggled in yesterday morning and watched the show.  It was just wonderful!  The artwork and CGI graphics were incredible and the story simple and straight to the heart.  Most of all, it has the ability to pull you right into its world and make you completely forget the real world around you.  In that respect it reminded me of reading C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia when I was younger though they are not the same type of story at all.  If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for an incredible treat and if you have seen it already - see it again!

  1. well, drat! if i’d just known you were paying for other’s electricity i’d have happily sent you our bills! do you think your power provider will try to do some retroactive figuring to correct what you’re out, or is this one of those ‘bye bye bucks’ things?

those little socks are so cute- have you thought about doing them with ribbing down the calf and on the top of the foot maybe? or maybe a series of rounds of reverse stockinette ‘bumps’ going down the calf? you’re right, they do lend to thinking about ‘what if...?’

christmas movies! i think i need to go watch ‘the perfect storm’ instead and count my blessing-

    stay happy-

  2. Wow, y’all are some generous neighbors!  Since you didn’t even know you were being so generous that’s got to a huge pile of good karma.
I’m thinking how scary it is to be an electrician and try to work on something like that.  The neighbors would have sworn up and down all the breakers were off, only they wouldn’t be.
We got a lot of electrically related info on the radio over the 10 days without power after Rita, ie., backfeeding generators and power surges. I guess every experience IS a learning experience afterall.
Your new critters are cute and their names even more so. I can imagine how my cat and dog both would be fascinated by such new residents.
I guess y’all don’t want to start a battle over it but the landlord should broker some kind of reimbursement from your neighbors.  I’m sure if the situation was reversed they wouldn’t just ignore a fair settlement.
The dulaan socks are wonderful.  I received that hat book Ryan talked about on her blog.  The only day the USPS missed was the actual day of the hurricane.  But I didn’t care to knit while it was so terribly hot and humid and me without my AC or my AC.  I decided to start at the beginning and have got about 6 inches into the classic watch cap.  Those designs are just begging to be knit up.

  3. Barb - Yeah, ribbing is an option but not a particularly fun one for kids, I don’t think.  But I could definitely see making little designs out of purl stitches - that could be cute :)

  4. Aarlene - Glad to hear from you kiddo!  Glad to know you’re okay :)

No, I don’t think there’s much chance - outside of a lawsuit - of getting any compensation.  I’ll have to be happy with the karma :)

Is Hat’s On the book you’re talking about?  I’ve had it out of the library - very nice!

  5. I’ve got to rent The Polar Express - thanks for the recommendation. :)

Regarding the electricity - aaargh! There should be a law, eh? How bizarre & frustrating it is when something like that happens. But you’re taking it with good grace - which can only increase your good karma. :)

  6. Bron - You know, sometime karma sounds an awful lot like kinetic energy :) Oh well - a store of either one is a pretty good thing I guess :)

  7. Yep it’s the Hats On! and the mitten book by the same author.  Lots and lots of dulaan knitting in those books.
Y’all be careful with all that water.  More people have died from that flooding up there than in our latest hurricane.  I dug out our life jackets we got for going to the lake up at my Mom’s.  I figured I might get blown away or squashed by a tree but it’d take some doing to drown me.  Luckily we didn’t get but a scant fraction of the rain they predicted.

  8. Aarlene - Yeah, we’re getting swamped up here.  It should break on Saturday.  In the mean time, I’m sticking to high ground :)
