Dobby and the Doggerel

Good morning!  I’m feeling so disgustingly perky this morning I’m almost offending myself :)

Almost…

I’ve been working on a Dobby Hat.

Dobby hat 1

I like it, even the stripes.  I knit it in the round (it is written to be knit flat, but I’m a lazy sod and didn’t want to sew a seam) and I extended the ribbing a bit so that it could be folded up and still be wide enough to cover the ears.

Dobby hat 2

It’s a fine hat but it’s not quite what I wanted.  It’s not...erm...eccentric enough.  So now I’m wondering what would happen if I employed short rows along the length past the top of the head.  Would that make the hat curve in a bizarre but charming fashion?  Only one way to find out :)

At some point over the last week, the Bloggers (Silent) Poetry Reading and my diet conspired in my unconscious to produce this.  I take no credit and accept no blame; the little buggers are just using my fingers.  However, I will offer profound apologies to Oscar Hammerstein :) If you know the tune to My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music, you might want to hum along :)

My Favorite Tastes

Sauces on pasta,
And crisp chow mein noodles.
Ice cream with butterscotch,
Oodles and oodles!
When I was young, it was library paste.
These are a few of my favorite tastes.

Bread rich with butter,
And all kinds of cheeses.
Pizza that makes me
Fall down on my kneeses.
Turkey and stuffing, in golden juice bastes.
These are a few of my favorite tastes.

Oreo cookies and pot roast with gravy.
Rich, hearty soup made with ham and beans, navy!
Pastry that adds inches
On to my waist,
These are a few of my favorite tastes!

When the world bites,
And I’m hungry,
Feeling less than cool -
I simply remember my favorite tastes
And then I just drown in drool!

Have a very musical Wednesday :)

  1. a big round of applause for your muse- that was delightful and fun- of course i’ll be humming ‘my favorite things’ all day now, but at least it’s a cheerful tune-

dobby is neat- aren’t you being the productive one now?? i’m partial to greens anyway, and those colors are very easy on the eyes- umm, what did you use for the white stripe? that looks interesting-

    stay happy-

  3. Barb - I think I love everything Rogers and Hammerstein (and Lerner and Loewe. and Cole Porter and Jerome Kern...) ever wrote and I frequently mourn the passing of the classic musical.

  9. Laurie - Maybe we ought to collaborate on a musical?  Heheh - but who’s going to write the music?

  13. I like the Dobby hat, but isn’t it too , um, mugglish? I think Hermione might have thought a little more elfish? Some short rows might work, but my first thought was patterns. My image was always one of the elves being given something that looks like a sock. Try some stranded knitting in random colours. Or, since you’re going to try with short rowa, a variegate might produce interesting results.  Just my thoughts.

I too love the classic musicals and mourn their passing.

  14. Amaryllis - That’s worth thinking about as I’ve been musing on colorwork anyway :) But I don’t think it would look like a sock; the elves have very definite ideas about socks and would, I imagine, have very definite ideas about hats as well :)

  15. Oh dear.  Not about the hat, which you should make as eccentric as you please.  No, it is the diet psychosis that concerns me.  When I start singing, dreaming and fantasizing about chocolate, I have discovered there is only one remedy.  One, small, real, piece of good chocolate.  That way, the cravings don’t take over, I don’t feel deprived, and I don’t, after weeks of fending off chocolate cravings, dive headfirst into pounds of the stuff. Just my personal experience.  Of course, you are the person who successfully lost 8 lbs.  I haven’t been on a scale in months wacky.gif width=15 height=15

  16. Rob - No worries, I’m not having cravings :) Just an odd turn of mind.

    Eccentric - good word!
