I worked on the fancy scarf yesterday and got a good deal more done - including joining the second slippery-as-snot ball of microfiber. I should be able to finish it before too much longer. I’m thinking of edging it with some similar yarn in a teal color and perhaps fringing it too? With beads? That may be a bit overboard. I’ll have to see when I get there.
I wound a ball of the Waterspun last night and started to play with it. I had in mind a Coronet sort of thing except maybe changing the kind of cable and doing something a little different with the body of the hat.
First, the Waterspun is nice - but odd. It’s a worsted yarn, but it’s very light so there’s a bit of cognitive dissonance as I’m knitting along. It works up nicely though and, because of its fulled nature, doesn’t split at all. It’s also very pretty. So here’s where I ask for all your opinions :)
Cable braid
The other hat possibility is the Spiral Cap.

Actually, this is one of those days where I feel completely thumb-fingered and hopeless. I feel like I should go back to knitting fuzzy scarves and stop pretending I know how to do anything else. It’ll pass.
No trackbacks yet.
The cable does appear get lost a bit with the variegated yarn. It may look better when completely done, since it’ll be larger-scale, but I think textured knit patterns (like cables) generally work best with solid colors.
Nice hats! About your mystery place, I definitely believe that “places” can have a certain energy. And I’m not afraid to get all mystical. I wonder, sometimes, if natural beauty has energy. I’ve only felt this kind of thing in a specific place up north, Michigan.
Although the colors are pretty, it seems to over power the cables, I think.
I’d call it subtle. But I think it’s bold enough to work.
Gotta say, I think the variegation obscures the cables. I think it’s the stripes of color that are making the cables look fragmented, not smooth, continuous and fluid the way they’re supposed ta’.
Natalie, Judy and Ryan -
What you say coincides with how I saw it. If the colors had a longer repeat - but they don’t. Thanks so much for your observations and comments.
Larry - I always think of cables as kind of bold things. You know, standing out there and grabbing the eye. But a subtle cable? That’s an interesting concept. I’m gonna have to mull that over; that may be worth fooling around with!
Thanks!
Marcy - you may recognize the orchid hat as the one from the “how to fix a cable” post :)
I’ve had design conundrums with variegated yarn before, too. One time I did something that involved eyelets, which gives you some stitch interest, but doesn’t get obscured by the yarn pattern. Another time I did a chunky rib, which would be a good place to run a cable or two. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
Thanks Laura :) I’m working it out. I really like variegated yarns, but I really hate working plain stockinette - hence the problem :)
I used to think that variegated yarns will hide the cables. After I saw the bags with cable patterns my colleague knitted in Kureyon, I find the effect different but nice too. To me, your waterspun with cable looks good but it’s very much up to your preference.
Siow Chin - Thanks for your observation. I was playing with the idea of going ahead anyway and I think you’ve helped me make up my mind! The cabling doesn’t stand out but it isn’t exactly invisible either.
