An unexpected surprise!

ACK!

All around me, people are having startitis with abandon and what did I do this past weekend?  Well, I picked up and put down the mitten at least a dozen times working, maybe, one row per pick-up.  I have been casually thinking that a crocheted cotton bag would see me through the rest of the summer in style and so tried that out Saturday evening - tried it out and ripped it out - and after 5 or 6 swings at it, gave it up as a bad job.  Oh yeah, I also cast on for socks yesterday before remembering that with a sock book coming, (soon, I hope!) anything I started now would be doomed to forlorn abandonment :)

Part of my sense of “hanging” is that I have already decided what I want to do next - The Moonlight Sonata shawl as I mentioned on Saturday - but I’m still waiting for the yarn to arrive and so can’t do anything about that yet.

However, I did receive a package in the mail Saturday - not the one I was expecting though.  This one was a wonderful surprise!  It contained…

Assortment of teas

...an assortment of teas.  The Lady Grey is in a zip-lock because I, impatient wench that I am, couldn’t wait to try it out and so opened the package almost as soon as I got it out of the box :)

Diabetic cookbook

...a wonderful cookbook put together especially with the needs of diabetics in mind and paying attention not just to sugars, but to carbohydrates as well.  The thing about this book is that it doesn’t just tell you to eat oatmeal and fresh fruit.  It has recipes for Singapore Noodles, Beef Satay, Kumara and Coriander soup (sweet potato and cilantro) and a host of other wonderful, interesting and mouth-watering things :)  There’s a Daal with egg and eggplant that I’m especially anxious to try!

Mini-snips

...and these tiny mini-snips (about an inch from end to end) which are about the cutest things I ever saw.  They will come in very handy and I’m just trying to figure out where they’ll be the most useful.  I’ll probably hang them on my key ring - that way they’ll be handy wherever I happen to be!

This unexpected and much appreciated largess comes from Nat over at KnittingNatty and is a late birthday present.  Nat it’s all splendid.  I’m sampling the teas and absolutely agog at the cookbook.  In fact, I’m going to go out to shop tomorrow with some specific things from that book in mind.  Thank you so much for this package - I love it all!

Finally I sat down last night and started another One Row scarf - my old stand-by when I can’t think of anything else to do (anything else that’s likely to actually be completed, that is!) and need something easy to work on.  Despite my continuing confusion and sorrow over the Dulaan project, there will be somewhere for this to go and, hopefully, someone to enjoy it at the other end :)

One row scarf

Yes, yes, not forgetting the mittens :)

  1. Cool cookbook! My friend was recently diagnosed with diabetes. That would make a great gift!

  2. Opal - Well, it would be but this one’s an Australian publication :)  Still, I’m sure there similar publications out there that are equally good!

  3. Nice gift! I love those little scissors! The key ring is a great idea. I can’t tell you how many times I have been without a pair when I really needed them. I like the pink scarf too!

  4. I’m confused. Nothing new about that but… somehow I missed some posts, and keep forgetting Chatters moved, and now the Dulaan thing.  What really is confusing me is the Dulaan thing.  What I gather is that Mossy Cottage and her Cuzzin Tom decided to stop the Dulaan project, but the FIRE folks are continuing it.  Right?  I didn’t really get Mossy Cottage’s explanation.  Of course Mongolia needs other types of economic development now—so does New Orleans—but the kids still need hats, right? And mittens?

  5. Lisa - Yeah - those little things are going to be coming in real handy.  So - useful and cute - how can you lose?

That “One row” pattern is great - texture and interest that you can still do easily - even half asleep :)  Ask me how I know?  Heheh…

  6. Rob - You echo my own confusion almost exactly.  As I understand it, yes - F.I.R.E. is continuing things whether anyone else is involved or not.  Why, exactly, Dulaan has been discontinued I don’t understand.  Certainly other options can be explored but as you quite rightly point out - there are still people in need.

Pwesonally, that’s the most difficult thing I’m wrestling with.  I feel like I’m abandoning people who still need help - and by that, I mean the kind of help that I can give - a hat,a pair of socks, a scarf…

    See?  Confused…

  7. Well, so why abandon them?  You can send things to FIRE.  I gather from Mossy Cottage that she feels they are rewriting history, but that’s really about her personal feelings about dropping her involvement.  I don’t want to diminish those feelings, because she put a lot of time and work into this, but she herself chose to stop.  Warm hats and mittens can still go.  Would she consider it an unfriendly thing for you to do?  If you don’t want to get in the middle of hurt feelings, perhaps you can send hats and mittens to Children in Common, and keep some kids warm there.

  8. Rob - All good points :)  I’ve looked into CIC as well as Afghans for Afghans - there are certainly plenty of places for warm stuff to go to.
