Again with the color!

There’s a new entry over at The Dye Pot - my first intentional attempt at dyeing a multi-colored yarn :) It’s called Crimson and Clover.  Let me know what you think - I would especially appreciate your thoughts on any ways I might improve the process.

I’m hoping to decide on a new big project over the weekend and in the mean time I’m working on smaller things like hats and scarves and socks - nothing new or exciting.

Summer’s winding down and I’m kind of sorry to see the end of the really good peaches and fresh corn we’ve had this year - even though I’m looking forward to the butternut and the acorn squash.  Our trees are beginning to turn already - probably because of the very cool (relatively speaking) August.  Many are sporting a single branch of brilliant yellow or glowng crimson.  Others just have a few leaves here and there - like colorful freckles :) It’s certainly a pretty process to watch but it does make me wonder what this coming winter is going to be like.

Just out of curiousity - has anyone ever kept basil going through the winter - indoors?  We bought a huge fresh bunch a couple of weeks ago.  We trimmed the ends and stuck it in a large glass of water - and it’s growing roots!  I’d love to plant it if there’s any chance of keeping it going - anyone know?

Have a great weekend, all :)

  1. I’ve been growing basil in a large flower pot all summer. A few weeks ago, I planted my second batch. It’s cooling down quite a bit at night now, so as of last night, the basil is now inside. You can definitely grow it indoors. Remember to pinch the tips to prevent flowering and to encourage bushier plants (more leaves). There is nothing like fresh basil… love it!

  2. Ev - Wow - that’s great!  I hadn’t even thought about planting them from seed at this time of year, but if the plant will grow indoors through the winter (the kitchen gets plenty of sun) that would be awesome!  You’re right - there’s nothing like fresh basil - or anything else for that matter :) Thanks for writing!

  3. Good advice about the basil. Butternut is my favorite squash. My sister just picked some up at a farm stand for me.

  4. Maureen - Butternut is awesome!  We’ll find some at our favorite farm stand and buy six or so to get to November and the Thanksgiving sales and then we’ll buy some more to get through the winter.  They keep so well - we stored 3 in a cabinet last year and they were fine - had the last one in April, I think :)

  5. I think that basil cna be quit easily gorwn indoors over Winter - they need lots of direct sunshine though (and I’m sure you can oblige!). the pinching is a good idea as the flowers are not as good to cook with, although I know it has been done…

  6. Nat - You know, I think I would try growing it even if I never used it to cook with - just for the fabulous scent of the leaves, wafting through the kitchen!  Mmmmmm.......

  7. Ohhh, the smell of basil all winter… The only problem for me in this house is getting enough light.  I did bring rosemary into the house one winter and used to go over and brush it with my hands just for the smell.  Gotta try the basil some day.

  8. Wow!  Just took a look at the Crimson and Clover.  LOVELY!  I have never tried deliberate multicolor dyeing—I have to build myself up to anything with that many steps but I really like your results.

  9. Rob - Rosemary?  Oooooh - Myria would dearly love to grow rosemary and it is one of our favorite seasonings.  Will it winter over indoors well?  Man, that would be fantastic!

I like the colors too but I find an odd thing is happening.  When I look at the yarn I can clearly see the purple and the red.  But my mind’s eye persists in seeing the red as a goldeny yellow.  Myabe it’s just suggesting a nice color to go along with - but it’s a tad disconcerting :)
