A productive weekend

Entrelac II

I finished the body of the shawl over the weekend.  You see it here in all its end trailing glory because I haven’t tidied the piece up yet and probably won’t until I get the edging figured out and applied and then get everything washed and blocked - at which point I will also post the pattern.

Saturday evening at Chatters, I was asking for suggestions for a border.  After doing some reading this weekend, I have to wonder if that’s the correct term.  I suspect it’s not.  My reading indicates that a border is something that goes between the shawl and the edging as in old-fashioned Shetland type shawls where there is a center design, a border design around that and an edging design around all.  I was thinking of a border in the general sense of decoration or demarcation.

I don’t think the shawl needs a border - but it does need an edging.  I used a variation on Hilton Lace on this shawl.  It came out very well and I love the way it looked.  I could do that; I have enough yarn and I know it would work beautifully but something keeps nagging me to find another design…

So for now, I’ll continue to look around and fiddle :) I have the security of know that if I can’t find something else reasonably suitable, the Hilton Lace will look great.

And, while it hasn’t made a big deal of itself yet, I have, in the recesses of my brain, been considering what my next big project should be.  I believe I even have the yarn for it and the idea is beginning to bubble and surface even as the shawl begins to fade into the sunset…

Sunset?  Hmmm....

  1. A beautiful shawl, indeed. Does it *need* a border, edge, whatever? The diamonds are so strong, I think it’d take a similarly strong, maybe smaller, echo of them to be a good complement. Maybe sawteeth (hope that’s what I’m thinking of) using the colors in the shawl? I’ll be interested in what you decide.

  2. i can’t remember where i read it, (i think it was in one of the ez tomes or perhaps in an article about shetland shawls) but i have a vague memory about the use of ‘border’ as an insertion between the main body of the shawl and the ‘edging’- to further confuse matters, i know a lot of patterns do refer to the edges as borders- knit/crochet semantics, anyone?

aren’t you the productive and busy one? my knitting mojo is either perched atop mt. everest or lodged in a deep abyss somewhere as i cannot settle down to anything lately- heck, i’m not even feeling the real urge to start anything- it was that ugly baby blanket that did this to me!! beware projects you just don’t like but feel obligated to finish-

    stay happy-

  3. I am wondering if an edging out of one of your accent colors would be cool. Maybe something fairly plain (as in not lacey) to go with the plainer stockinette theme of the shawl. Sorry we couldn’t help you out more in chatters. We sure had fun anyway though, didn’t we? :)

  4. your shawl looks just beautiful! I too had difficulty with the finishing for the baby blanket as there were not any yo holes etc to draw on By that stage I was tired of it, and just ended up with a CC cast off, which was effective enough

Good luck with your decision making !

  5. Luise - I think it does, though I agree that it should be something simple.  The color does the talking here and I don’t want to mess with that :)

  6. Barb - That dratted baby blanket!  You must start something sensational and sinful - just for you!  It’s the only way to take the curse off - but it should work very well.

Listen to me - as though I didn’t know Christmas was coming…

  8. Lisa - I’ve been thinking about using the contrast colors.  The only problem is that I have limited amounts of them.  Not enough for a full border, but certainly enough for a minimalist kind of trim on the border.

    Great minds think alike!

And you are always great help at Chatters and we did, indeed, have a wonderful time :)

  9. Nat - I’m not tired of it yet - but by the time I finish the border, I probably will be.  But then I get to wear it - so there are compensations :)

  10. Opal - Thank you :) Hopefully it will look even better when it’s complete.

  11. Robbyn, what about doing something like a sawtooth border in the main color and then doing single crochet with the orange and reverse crochet with the red?

  12. Anne - That’s a teriffic idea and goes along with the general parameters I had in mind :) Thanks for the suggestion!
