Black Jade and Orange Mittens

The desktop computer system is currently undergoing an overhaul.  The CPU bade farewell to this mortal realm a couple of weeks ago and we’ve discovered that the motherboard needs to be replaced as well.  So things are kind of discombobulated over in that corner of the living room.

The computer itself had been living in a built in cubby beneath the corner angle of the desk (the desk having been designed in an L shape to fit into a corner) with the monitor sitting on a little shelf that sits over the cubby.  When she began taking things apart, Myria discovered that the air vents in the case were choked with dust because there simply wasn’t enough room between the case and the cubby walls for air to circulate freely.  So it was decided that the case would live on the floor under the desk.  That left the cubby free.

Yesterday morning, I was walking through the living room and Jade was trying to get my attention.  She ran past me, jumped up on the desk and then down into the cubby where she turned around and sat staring up at me through the hole.  Heheh - crazy cat :)  So I grabbed my camera but before I could get the thing focused, she was out again and headed for the printer.  She (and Goldie too, for that matter) seems to know exactly when to move in order to ruin the shot.  Interesting talent…

Jade

What’re you lookin’ at?

There are several cat toys lying around, but somehow they seem to remain confined to the hallway.  I find this very curious.  In all the space of the apartment, the toys don’t get lost under the bed or the dresser nor moved around much at all.  They certainly do get played with as we see the cats playing with them - but always in the hall.

Cat Toys

The playground

There’s a toy in each circle.  They consist of two furry mice, a cat-nip stuffed lady bug (which also has some nice crackly plastic inside which Jade loves the sound of) and Jade’s weasel.  It’s not really a weasel.  What it looks like is a raccoon’s tail with eyes.  It came with her when we acquired her last summer and has gotten very disreputable over time, but it is her favorite.  On rare occasion we do find the weasel in other places as she sometimes carries it around as though it were a kitten.  I once woke up to find it right next to me :)

Hat and mittens

Mittens done

I had thought that these mittens would go with the hat in the picture.  As I look at them together I have to wonder if the hat wouldn’t be better for a considerably smaller child than the mittens :)  No matter, I guess, they’ll get distributed to them as needs ‘em in any case.

Posting may be a bit sporadic over the next couple of weeks as there are several things coming up that won’t leave a lot of knitting or posting time.  I will be here when and as I can.  In the meantime, please cross your fingers as I attempt a circular shawl cast-on - a procedure which is likely to take me three days at best :)

BTW - did anyone catch “Supernatural” on the WB last night?  Cute guys - creepy show!

  1. i won’t even begin to count the times i’ve cleaned *wads* of cat hair from the innerds of the computer and its peripherals- no matter how faithfully i brush the wee beasts, it seems they have some kind of magic ‘hair release’ apparatus which activates when they get near anything that will suffer from kitty fur-

is the circular cast-on for the kerry blue? i like the crochet cast-on for circular projects, but i can still manage to drop stitches with absolute abandon for the first couple of rows-

post ‘when and if’- we’ll all be around- stay happy-

  2. Cats love cubbies ... and deep drawers, and boxes. I bet Jade was just waiting for you to clear that space out for her.

The mittens and hat look very snuggly, with nice fall colors.

  3. Ah yes, the cat toy phenomenon.  Mine have a couple of knitted mice I’ve made for them that seem to be the favorites.  Every night Merlin brings at least one of them down to the living room, yowling loudly to announce what he’s doing.  Every morning Pandora has taken the mouse right back up to the bedroom and deposited it in the doorway.  It’s freakish.  =)

  4. Barb - Well, I tried my usual method three times last night - cast on straight pins and knit the first round off onto the circs.  I’m surprised you didn’t hear me cussing :)

Yep, cat hair seems to have a real affinity for computer innards :)

  5. Becca - I’m sure you’re right.  But most of my previous cats showed no interest in such things and loved to get right in the middle of an unmade bed and snuggle down into the blanket.  So while I know cats often enjoy small spaces, I’m still startled when Jade shows her interest.  She’s a funny kid :)

  6. Erin - What a hoot!  But hey - it’s nice Pandora does the picking up so you don’t have to!

  7. The hat and mitten set are very cute! I’m not even going to comment on the kitties because I adore them and think they can do no wrong. Well, except for that thing where they want to get close to you so wrap around your head when you sleep. That’s a bit much. But still cute!

  8. Thanks Toni :)  I adore my cats too though they don’t do the wrap-around-the-head thing.  Jade does like to lie across my arms when I’m trying to type though :)  She’d go to sleep there too, if I let her!

  9. As long as you remember that we are here for the cats, not the other way around, things will be fine. :-D

Bucky used to ONLY play in the hallway. If you tossed something out of the hall, he wouldn’t follow it.  But that’s because the hallway has carpet and no other room does.  That’s not your case.  Your cats are just strange! LOL!

You could always give the mittens and hat separately. “I saw how much you liked the hat so I made you mittens, this year.”

Didn’t catch “Supernatural”.  Was busy recording about 6 other shows!  The summer is a vast wasteland and now we have to scramble to catch everything.

  10. Laurie - LOL, yes, my cats are strange :)  But I think that’s one of the resons they’re so much fun.  And they may think I’m only here to wait upon their every whim, but if they wake me too early in the morning they’re still going to get squirted :)

  11. Oh man! I wanted to see the “Supernatural” premiere. I even looked for it, then was distracted by the “Bones” series premiere & the season premiere of “House.”

Too much TV, too little time. I don’t want to look too closely at what that says about me. ;)

  12. Bron - Check your listings - the pilot is being shown again on Sunday the 18th.  Oh and it runs about an hour and 6 minutes so don’t flip the channel too soon.  You so don’t want to miss the ending :)

  13. I love the orange mittens and hat. It looks like wonderful yarn to work with. What a great picture of Jade. She does look like she is saying"What are you looking at?” They are so funny.

  14. Maureen - Thanks!  Shortly after I started making the hat, I noticed a house on the next street over that’s almost the same colors - really!  The house is purple and the trim and shutters are burnt orange.  I wanted to take the hat over there and take a picture of it in front of the house (just from the street) but I was afraid of wigging out the residents :)

  15. Kitties are great, aren’t they!  Gorgeous hat and mitts.  I always feel a sense of accomplishment after making a pair of mitts because I rarely finish the second one!

  16. Cheryl - Thanks :)  I don’t generally have a problem with mittens - it’s the second sock that kills me.  I either only get about halfway through it or never get it started at all!
