Hat and Homespun

I had a supremely unmotivated day yesterday - mostly what I did was read (and I highly recommend Terry Pratchett’s The Wee Free Men and Neil Gaiman’s Coraline.  A caveat however, Coraline is ostensibly aimed at young adult readers.  This book would have scared me to pieces when I was a young adult and managed to give me a good case of the creeps even at my ripe old age :)

Finished Pinwheel hat

Fait Accompli

I did finish the hat and am very happy with it.  It came out really nicely, I think - and it should because this is the fourth time I’ve made this pattern.  I guess it’s true about practice making perfect.

Of course as soon as the hat was completed - at about 11:00 last night - my motivation took a major upswing as I realized the needles were now free to cast on the scarf.  The scarf-in-the-round experiment didn’t work out too well and has been frogged - so an ordinary, flat scarf it will be.  And I really, really wanted to cast on for it last night, but I knew I’d be up for hours if I did that.  So I was a good girl (hah!) and went to bed.

Homespun stash

Homespun blues

I have given up trying to find something to do with the Homespun blues and am going to send them to someone I know who can use them.  In checking all the places I’m likely to stash yarn I discovered 14 skeins of this stuff.  A couple of them have been used up a bit, but most of them are whole and ready to go.  I’m kinda sorry I couldn’t make my peace with this stuff as the colors are fabulous and I really loved them.  But better it go to my friend who can make use of it than it sit in my closet so that I can look at the colors once in a while - I can go to the store to do that!

The weather is extremely grey, rainy, raw and gloomy today so I think I’m going to light all the candles I can find and go to work on my scarf - and maybe one other thing I’ve been thinking about.

Happy Thursday, folks!

  2. Jenn - I’m terribly sorry if you were misled; I already have a recipient for the Homespun.  Hope your project comes out well!

  3. Love the pinwheel hat. The color is just striking. As for the “Homespun”....they do have such a beautiful selection of colors. But, I had a problem with the yarn bunching all the time. That is nice of you to pass it on to someone who can use it. It is a great day to knit today. It is pouring buckets here. I might take a cue from you.

  4. this is still the sun and sweat season here so no grey cozy days for knitting- never one to be controlled by the environment though, i am galloping right along on cap and mitten (we’ll see if i can actually produce a pair this time)  and loving the pinwheel hat pattern-

with 14 skeins of blue homespun i am sure your friend can produce something quite lovely- it does come in delightful colors but its texture sorta limits me to garter or stockinette- i *know* it can work up into pretty and comfy items-

ah, the boucle is working quite nicely for a ‘little girl poncho’ which should satisfy my urge to be a lemming and make what everyone else has on the needles- i seem to be afflicted with a case of ‘follow the leader’ and am lately incapable of having a single original thought- oh well, my mother used to be forever telling about ‘too many chiefs and not enough followers’ so i guess i took her lessons to heart-

    stay happy-

  5. Maureen - I really like that deep pink myself :)

I thought I was going to make a go of the HOmespun, but I couldn’t get it to work for me.  I couldn’t even crochet with the stuff :(

  6. Barb - I keeping my fingers crossed for you hat and mittens!  Go, girl!

As for the poncho - choice is what it’s all about - right?  This time you choose to go with the style.  Next time you might not :)

  7. Hey Robbyn…....

Nice Hat!! I think I probably said that with the others possibly, but it’s still true! Refresh my memory….pretty please? Is it your own pattern or ? Sorry, if I had a memory I’d likely be dangerous. ;-D

Homespun….....sigh. YEs, I understand exactly what you’re saying. I have to knit on REALLY big needles to stand it…and it feels “squeaky” between my fingers, which I don’t care for much. But, i have some. And I’ll probably use it for something again. Nice colors, inexpensive…, wears like iron…what else can I say?

  8. Wow, those blues look gorgeous! I finally finished the sweater for Joel out of the light brown and white homespun and it came out very nice (thanks to your help!). The homespun really does work up nice and soft. The only thing I didn’t like about it was that the ends fray, making it a little difficult to sew the seams. Still, i do like the way it feels and works and I didn’t have much trouble knitting it up (other than interpreting the idiotic directions). I can see those blues making a couple of nice sweaters for the boys and maybe some hats, or, if I REALLY get motivated, a sweater for (gasp) ME!

    Ooo, I am so excited!!!

  9. I love the flowers on your side bar!! THe hat is wondeful, too!  It’s really cool (warm) and looks like one I’d like to wear.

  10. Lisa - Thanks, I love this hat.  The pattern is not my own, but one I retrieved from the net years ago from a site that no longer exists.  I have posted the pattern (sidebar: under patterns) with this dis-calimer and a request for source information if anybody happens to know it.

  11. Donna m’dear - I’ll try to get it sent out before too much longer.  I hope you enjoy the stuff.  BTW - for seaming, maybe you could use another type of yarn in an agreeable color?

  12. Margene - I took that picture up in Maine this past spring.  The white geranium and the seep purple petunias were just so pretty :)

The hat pattern is on the sidebar with a note about my own modifications.

  13. I love your new hat.  But am puzzled about your side bar.  It doesn’t show up on my monitor.  Do you know why I can’t see it?

  14. Charlotte - I have no idea - is your monitor resolution set low?  Check the bottom of your page to see if the sidebar has shifted there.

  15. Robbyn, I haven’t changed any settings on my computer so I don’t know why I can’t see your sidebar.  I’ve been sitting here trying to remember if I ever could see it and I think I used to see a photo kind of to one side but it disappeared a few weeks ago.  I just figured you had quit posting it.  Obviously, I’m mistaken.  Computers are a real mystery and I’m convinced they have minds of their own.
